The Sendero de los Sentidos — the Path of the Senses — is a stretch of Anaga’s old royal road, adapted to be walked slowly and with all five senses. It starts at the Cruz del Carmen visitor centre, splits into three short combinable routes, and the first of them runs on a boardwalk accessible by wheelchair and pushchair.

What it is

It is not a mountain route and not a company running excursions: it is a public trail inside the Anaga Rural Park, signposted and maintained by the Tenerife Cabildo, walked independently. It starts at the Cruz del Carmen visitor centre on the ridge road.

The path underfoot was not laid out for strolling. It is part of the network of royal roads that linked the massif’s hamlets to La Laguna — the way people walked down to sell and to stock up before there was a road. Covering it in half an hour is a modern convenience; the route itself is centuries old.

The name comes from its premise: instead of offering distance or ascent, it offers attention. Touching damp bark, hearing water you cannot see, feeling the temperature drop on entering the closed forest, smelling tree-heath after rain. It is a way of showing the laurel forest to someone who would not know what to look at.

The three routes

The first is the shortest and runs on a wooden boardwalk with almost no gradient: it is the one wheelchairs and pushchairs can use, and it ends at the Cruz del Carmen viewpoint over the La Laguna valley.

The second follows much of the first and goes deeper into the monteverde, descending through a stretch where the trees close overhead into a tunnel. The third is the longest and drops to the Llano de los Loros viewpoint, where the forest opens suddenly onto the ravine.

All three are easy and combine with each other, so you can lengthen or shorten as you go depending on the weather, which in Anaga changes fast.

Before you go

  • Access is free and no booking is needed. It is worth checking trail status on the Tenerife Cabildo website, as sections close for works or storms.
  • Fog is part of the place, not bad weather. It can be clear in Santa Cruz and closed in here twenty minutes away.
  • The Cruz del Carmen car park is small and fills early at weekends and on public holidays.
  • Closed shoes: the boardwalk and the stone are damp most of the time.
  • There is a bus from La Laguna to Cruz del Carmen, and in high season it is usually easier than driving up.
  • The visitor centre has toilets, information and a viewpoint; beyond it there are no facilities.
