Reaching La Palma: plane, ferry and what decides the day
La Palma is not a direct-connection island from anywhere in Europe, and that shapes the trip more than people allow for. There are two routes — plane and boat — and both have a local peculiarity worth knowing before you buy tight tickets.
By plane
There is an airport on the island, with flights from mainland Spain and internal connections to the other islands. The peculiarity is not frequency: it is that the airport is on the eastern flank and wind and fog affect operations. Diversions and delays happen, and they are not exceptional in bad weather.
That has a practical consequence: do not build in minimum-margin connections. If the inter-island flight is delayed and you miss your flight home, the next option may be the following day.
By boat
There are ferries from other islands in the archipelago. It is slower and depends on sea conditions, so the same warning as on any crossing: with swell, a departure can be cancelled even in sunshine.
In exchange, the boat carries your car, and on La Palma having a car changes the trip: it is a steep island where public transport does not reach every point of interest at the hour a walker needs.
What decides the trip once you are there
The car and the road. The island is small in kilometres and large in time: mountain roads with constant bends and gradient. Journeys take longer than the map says, and considerably longer at night.
And the detail that surprises: there are two climates in a very short space. You can leave the east under cloud, cross the ridge and find the west clear, or the reverse. It is worth checking the forecast by flank rather than for «the island».

Scheduling La Palma as a two-day stopover inside a trip to another island. With the travel times, the gradients and the chance of weather taking charge, two days becomes one useful day. This island asks for its own trip.
