Staying the night, and how it changes the island
Most people visit La Graciosa for the day and return to Lanzarote on the last boat. Staying overnight is a different experience — the island empties when the ferry leaves — but it comes with conditions worth knowing in advance, because accommodation here does not work like a normal destination.
What there is
Limited, small-scale accommodation: apartments and houses in Caleta de Sebo, not large hotels. Supply is short by definition, because the island is small and protected.
That means two things: book well ahead, especially in season, and do not count on finding something on arrival.
What there is not
- You cannot camp freely. It is a protected area: camping is regulated and you do not pitch a tent wherever you like.
- There are no large supermarkets. There is shopping for the village, with village hours.
- There is no nightlife, and that is precisely the reason to stay.
Why it is worth it
Because when the last ferry leaves, the island changes. The village is left with its own people, no day-trippers, and two things appear that a day visit never shows:
1. The silence. With no cars and no traffic, the background noise is the sea and the wind.
2. The sky. There is no city lighting and you are north of Lanzarote, with the big island to the south blocking little. It is a far better sky than you would expect somewhere this flat and accessible.
How to organise it
- Book before travelling, not on arrival.
- Bring what you need from the pharmacy and anything specific: replacing something here is not immediate.
- Cash, in case something does not take cards.
- And know the return ferry time for your departure day, because it is the only way out.
What is asked of anyone who sleeps here
That you treat the place as a village and not as a resource. Water is shipped to the island, rubbish is not magically carried away, and the sand streets are the streets of people who live there all year.
It is a genuinely inhabited island, and that is exactly what makes it different from a theme park.
